The 2024 Year Game runs through January.
All 2024 YearGame submissions must be completed by 11:59:59 pm on 1/31/24.
Entries will no longer be accepted after midnight. Please plan accordingly.
YearGame winners will be announced at the TechFest GeekOut at Mansfield School in April (details TBA).
This is the Drexel University Math Forum annual Mathematics Game!
YearGame - who, what, why??
YearGame is a math activity/competition that is all about "creativity with constraints" ... Some years every solution is possible, some years we are lucky to solve even half of the values. Often once you find one key piece you can build many others from that one expression, such as last year's gem (value of 24):
[(2+1)!]!
YearGame can be done as a whole-class project, as a lesson series, as an individual vs. individual competition, as a teams competition - WHATEVER works for you. IF you have kids who get excited about it and want to submit to WCCSE, we now have a team of Peer Review Student Leaders who vow to review all answers and score all entries.
Last year (2021) we had a live Zoom with a mathematician from NCTM - might do that again, as we learned a few tricks!
I usually start it with fourth graders, though my most avid mathletes start in 3rd grade and really play hardball. My alum are now in middle school and clamoring to continue because they do not want to miss out. So yaay, I'll take that as a win for education.

Using only the digits in the year 2022 and the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square root, raise to a power, and factorial, along with parentheses, brackets, or other grouping symbols, write expressions for the counting numbers 1 through 100.
I use this starting with 4th graders (or exceptionally precocious 3rd graders), as our January math activity.
This requires that the kids learn PEMDAS as well as all the components of that, such as parentheses, distributive property, and exponents. Also, factorials are very helpful in developing solutions.
I will attach materials here, which you may want to print as handouts or displays. If anyone wants to make this an inter-school collaboration or competition, let me know so we can set up a communication venue as the time draws near.
~ Kristin
NOTE: You will need to adjust the handouts before printing to match the current year's digits.
