The rules are as follows:
1. The students will randomly select a number prior to the bee which will determine the order of contestants for the bee.
2. There will be one practice round with no eliminations.
3. Each speller will stand when it is his or her turn to spell.
4. The pronouncer will say the word two times. After the pronouncer gives a word, it is suggested that the speller SAY the word, SPELL the word, and SAY the word again. In the event that the speller does not say the word, he/she will not be disqualified.
5. Once the speller has said the word he/she has 10 seconds to begin spelling the word and 45 seconds to complete spelling the word.
6. If the speller starts spelling a word, he/she may not go back and change the sequence of the letters given.
7. The speller may ask the pronouncer to repeat the word, give a definition or use it in a sentence.
8. The judges will not disqualify a speller for failing to use a capital letter, hyphen, or other grammatical symbol as stated in the Scripps National Spelling Bee rules.
9. The bee will be conducted in rounds. Upon missing the spelling of a word, a speller immediately drops out of the competition and he/she will take a seat in the participation chairs. A new word on the pronouncer's list is given to the next speller.
10. If none of the spellers remaining in the spelling bee at the start of a round spells a word correctly during a round, all shall remain in the competition.
11. When the competition has only 2 spellers remaining and one of the contestants misspells a word, the last contestant must spell the next word correctly and then spell an additional word correctly.
The judge's decision is final.
10. End-of-bee procedure: (©2010, Scripps National Spelling Bee)
If all spellers in a round misspell:
If none of the spellers remaining in the spelling bee at the start of a round spells a word correctly during that round, all remain in the competition and a new round begins.
Ties:
All spellers eliminated in the same round are tied for the same place.
After the champion has been determined, spelling bee officials may opt to conduct tiebreakers (of their own design), if tiebreakers are necessary for the awarding of prizes or the determination of qualifying spellers for the next level of competition.
If only one speller in a round spells correctly:
If only one speller spells correctly in a round, a new one-word round begins and the speller is given an opportunity to spell the next word on the list (anticipated championship word). If the speller succeeds in correctly spelling the anticipated championship word in this one-word round, the speller is declared the champion.
VERY IMPORTANT:
If a speller misspells the anticipated championship word in a one-word round:
A new round begins with ALL the spellers who spelled (correctly and incorrectly) in the previous round. These spellers spell in their original order.
After the champion is determined, there may be an additional round to determine the 2nd and 3rd place winner if necessary.
